What music charts can tell us

Why a song's position depends on what the chart's compiler chooses to count.

A chart answers a particular question: which recordings received the most radio plays, attracted the most streams or won votes from a particular audience? These are different measurements. Before comparing two lists, read their descriptions, counting periods and the platforms they include.

A high position reflects a result within a chosen method. It does not measure the quality of a melody or predict your personal taste. A song's popularity on radio may differ from its position on a music service. Without a shared method, combining those figures into one universal ranking would be misleading.

Use charts as an invitation to explore. Choose an unfamiliar song, listen to it all the way through and compare your impression with the artist's other work. For release dates, version titles and credits, consult the artist's or label's official catalogue. In this way, a popularity list becomes the beginning of an investigation rather than a ready-made judgement about music.
